The Boots of Lunging are an Item equipped in the Footwear slot.
Effect[]
- Allows the player to jump over up to 3 tiles every time they move if able.
- Can be Toggled on/off by pressing Up + Down.
- Upon jumping into a monster or container, the boots deliver a lunging attack. This attack deals 4 Normal damage with Knockback.
- Knockback causes an enemy to be pushed back in the direction of the attack without moving forward in their action cycle, effectively delaying movement and attacks by a beat.
- As long as it is Toggled on, moving into a monster will cause this damage (except slipper on the ice), this include moving by Skeleton Mage, Shove Monster, Bounce Trap and so on.
Notes[]
- The player cannot throw weapons as the Toggle action overrides throwing.
- The lunging attack can also knock back NPCs, including the shopkeeper, without damaging or provoking them. The same is true for some monsters in their invulnerable state (like Ghosts and Burrowed Moles)
Notable Interactions[]
Dagger /
Spear - Cannot be thrown while Boots of Lunging are equipped.
Cat o' Nine Tails - Allows the player to move a single tile by move-attacking an enemy, even if Boots of Lunging are toggled on.
Crossbow /
Blunderbuss /
Rifle - The player cannot toggle the boots unless the weapon is fully loaded. The Reload action will appear over the Toggle action.
Boots of Leaping - Shares toggle states. Toggling Boots of Leaping OR Boots of Lunging off will set the other to be toggled off when initially picked up.
Ring of Phasing /
Phasing Mode - Moving through directly adjacent walls forces single-tile movement, but moving multiple tiles upon exiting a wall (dealing lunge damage in the process) is allowed. Unlike with Boots of Leaping, walls will always cut off a lunge, making a multi-tile jump directly into a wall impossible.
Rapier /
Axe - As long as it is Toggled on, it trigger after a lunging weapon deals damage with its lunge attack. Due to a bug, using a lunge attack against a rolling armadillo allows Boots of Lunging to damage it, usually killing it.
Ring of Courage - As long as it is Toggled on, killing an enemy with your weapon (non-weapon kills such as with Boots of Lunging will NOT trigger the ring unless the damage is dealt while attacking with a weapon) will move you forward, potentially triggering Boots of Lunging.
Blunderbuss /
Rifle - As long as it is Toggled on, the recoil effect will trigger the damage of it.
Differences between Boots of Lunging and Boots of Pain[]
Although both boots can deal damage when moving towards an enemy, there are several differences between the damage.
- Boots of Lunging will knock back NPCs and Gargoyles (and possibly making the Gargoyle explode) while Boots of Pain can't.
- Boots of Lunging will cause knockback to enemies while Boots of Pain won't.
- Stepping on a diagonal bounce trap will always cause Boots of Lunging to attack horizontally rather than diagonally, while Boots of Pain attacks diagonally.
- Boots of Lunging's damage can't be Parried by Blademaster while Boots of Pain's can.
- Boots of Lunging's damage won't trigger Warlock's teleporting effect and Ooze Golem's ooze spawn while Boots of Pain's will.
- Boots of Lunging can deal damage even Shrunken by the ooze while Boots of Pain can't.
- Boots of Lunging can't deal damage when slipping on the ice while Boots of Pain can.
Strategy[]
Boots of Lunging are arguably the most powerful but most difficult item to use in the game. Their quadruple movement with built-in move-attack allows for some very fast clears, but their high speed often makes them unwieldy and unpredictable, especially when moving vertically. While they're generally best left disabled most of the time for safety's sake, the lunge attack does have some very simple yet strong applications:
- Blademasters cannot parry lunge attacks, allowing for much easier kills.
- Lunge attacks push passive shopkeepers without damaging them, allowing the player to push them out of the shop and take items for free.
- Lunge attacks can easily open crates, barrels, and urns.
- Lunging saves a lot of time entering and exiting boss arenas, where there are no enemies to threaten the player.
While not at all recommended when playing purely for survival, Lunging does make for a respectable (if difficult to use) option in both speed and score runs.
Bugs[]
- Boots of Lunging may cause a game-crash when Nocturna is lunging into one of The Conductor's batteries and standing on the conduit next to it.
